Helen Vanderberg has been a Toastmaster since 2006, coming up through the ranks as a Competent Communicator with ten speeches under her belt, a further five Storytelling speeches and another five Speaking to Inform earning her the Advanced Speaker Bronze award.
She has served as Club Officer –President, Vice President Education and Treasurer, as well as Area Governor with responsibility for six clubs, proving her Leadership abilities.Toastmasters provided her an avenue and forum to learn and demostrate those skills.
Other Media Avenues
She has appeared twice as host-interviewer on the local TV channel 15, given and written interviews in Dallas (her previous stomping grounds) as well as produced a daily column in the newspaper, Westchester Rockland News out of White Plains, NY. She has given speeches on Self-Healing, and her story in this regard is detailed in Leigh Fortson’s book “Embrace, Release, Heal.”
Her other connections to community occur through the California Writers Club, South Bay branch, and the Red Hat society Silicon Valley.
In Dallas she ran a small advertising agency and produced five editions of Dallas in a Nutshell-a guide to the strangenesses that occur there. In propagating this little book, she found herself with an airline client, several real estate fans, and with Texas Instruments and Rockwell International on her client list. She had a wonderful time.
On arriving in California she found the place so attractive, the boosters didn’t need her skills, too many folk were flocking there already. What they needed was technical acumen. So she set about learning that, and became a technical writer for Sun Microsystems, SGI, and several small startups. She had fun there too, and also the pay was good even when the job wasn’t.
She has always been labeled as an Englishwoman (except by her friends in the UK). Her schooling is reflected in her accent.
She has travelled around the world, part of it sailing (her passion) and can be seen shore-side with love in her eyes at Yacht Races and regattas in the San Francisco Bay.
Another great love is Art and Art galleries, which constituted a large part of the Dallas in a Nutshell series. An earlier career was as a graphic designer which she had to abandon due to illness.
